Since I moved to NYC in May, I had to adapt to walking and talking public transit. This is my first time in 10+ years that I have not had my own car. Crazy, but I feel so liberated. As it heats up, my train time will decrease, and I naturally end up reading less. I’m about a 40 minute walk from my job and/or a 30 minute train ride, so I really can go either way.
Since I can’t carry a physical book and read while I walk, I’ve adapted to using Audible more and more. I’ve downloaded it for my LG G3 and my iPad so I always have something with me to listen on. When I’m home cleaning, I hook my iPad up to my speakers and play it loud enough so I can hear it while I shower, clean, lounge, etc. Lately, I’ve been lucky enough to have Dr. Phil in my ears.
We all know that Dr. Phil has a no-nonsense approach to… well, life. You really can’t expect anything less in his new book, The 20/20 Diet: Turn Your Weight Loss Vision Into Reality. One of my favorite quotes from the book was when he said the following:
He starts the book with identifying the seven reasons other diets fail people over and over again: hunger, cravings, feelings of restriction, impracticability and expense, boredom, temptations, and disappointing results of plateaus. But what I love, especially when listening, is that he uses himself as an example. He struggles with weight in the same way that us “normal folks” do – but he wants to be a winner, so he overcomes.
The program has 3 distinct phases:
+ PHASE I THE 5 DAY BOOST: This is the learning phase where you really take time to understand your body’s signals about hunger versus habit. There is a more restricted diet in this phases as well.
+ PHASE II THE 5 DAY SUSTAIN: Here you continue to build upon the first phase and you get to add a few more 20/20 approved foods into your plan. Here is where you begin to focus more on the “30-Second Burn Burst” exercise program.
+ PHASE III THE 20 DAY ATTAIN: Last but not lease, you work to get into the habit of a slow and steady weight loss, and even mix in dining out and other treats.
In my opinion, it’s easy to follow and fairly straightforward. I tend to favor this book more than others though because I appreciate the honesty that Dr. Phil conveys. He knows that french fries taste amazing. He acknowledges that we all want them – but he says that if you want to lose weight, you better get your mind right. The reader of this Audible book isn’t Dr. Phil himself BUT the man who they picked has the same type of sarcastic, yet loving, but straight forward tone in his voice.
