10 Ways to Drink More Water

Drinking enough water everyday can be a challenge if you are not someone who loves water. Here are 10 ways to help you drink more water everyday. Read and repeat.

  1. USE A STRAW: There’s something about drinking out of a straw that makes it just a little bit easier.
  2. BUY A FANCY WATER BOTTLE: If you invest a few dollars into a water bottle that you actually like, you may be more excited to drink more water. This works especially well in the workplace – water bottles can double as desk accessories. [Here are some suggestions!]
  3. SET AN ALARM EVERY HOUR: Every hour, on the hour – set an alarm to remind you to drink up. Ideally, a cup of water would be great, but even if it’s just a few sips, it helps. 
  4. SPICE IT UP WITH FRUIT: Plain water can easily get boring, so add in a few slices of lemon, lime, berries, or even cucumber! I know this makes me feel like I’m drinking spa water vs plain water from the office fountain.
  5. DRINK 1 CUP BEFORE EVERY MEAL: Did you know that it’s hard to tell the difference between feeling thirst and hungry? Drinking some water before you eat a meal can help you to avoid overeating.
  6. EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM, DRINK 1 CUP: This is another simple habit that you can’t avoid. If you worry about running to the bathroom since you’re drinking more water, try and trick yourself by drinking extra water whenever you have to actually go. You were on your way there anyways, right?
  7. DRINK 2 CUPS RIGHT BEFORE BED: I know there’s probably no science behind this, but I feel better when I drink a little water before I go to bed. I feel like my skin looks better when I wake up too. Maybe it helps me wake up less dehydrated?
  8. COMPETE WITH A FRIEND: We are always tracking steps, exercise, and calories – so why not track [and compete] with the amount of water we consume everyday? Now don’t go crazy and over drink – but see who can drink 8 cups of water first. 
  9. BUY A 64OZ BOTTLE AND FINISH IT EVERYDAY. Sometimes it’s easier to stay on track when everything is easily set up for success. You have 1 water bottle with the exact amount of water you need to consume ready to go. 64oz can be hard to find, but if worse comes to worse, you can find a 32oz bottle and only have to refill it once per day.
  10. FOR EVERY NON-WATER BEVERAGE, DRINK 2 CUPS OF WATER. Are you like my lovely boyfriend who prefers juice instead of water? Well, allow yourself to drink the juice… but then follow up with extra water. This is similar to the age-old drinking trick – for every alcoholic beverage, follow up with water. 

It may be a pain – but drinking water has SOOO many benefits – so drink up. Come hell or high water [pun-intended].

    I see it is an older post but wanted to comment on it. I find it hard to drink recommended amount of water a day. I wish a pretty bottle would do the trick. It definitely works with my kids though :). The only way I can drink water is when I add lemon juice into it. I go through 7-10 lemons a week.

  2. Buying a pretty bottle is such a small thing, but it really does help! If you love your bottle, then all of a sudden you want to take it everywhere with you. Love these tips!

    I so needed this reminder. Drinking enough water is a constant challenge for me. There was a point when I was doing really well and had an alarm set every hour and a half.

    I need to get back on that track.

    I kind of like the competition one. Dare to do it with me? This is really a (read: cry for help) way to motivate myself. Whatever works!

    The way I drink water is to put a bottle in the freezer for 5 minutes or so!! It’s SO refreshing especially a good spring/artesian!

    Honestly, I can’t get enough. I LOVE water and it really boggles my mind when people tell me they hate the taste of water. LOL!

    Lately I’ve been slacking on my H2O though. Gotta get a handle on that. (:

    When I was younger the only thing we didn’t have to ask permission to drink was water. Due to this I love water and drink it like crazy throughout the day. It’s honestly my favorite beverage.

    • That is so good! I grew up in a kitchen with every flavor of super sweet Kool Aid. I still can’t control myself if I have it made in the house for a BBQ. I didn’t start really drinking a good amount of water until after college.

    Wearing bracelets (rubber bands) and the left arm and moving one to the right arm through out the day to make sure you get your “8” glasses helps for beginners!

  8. Great tips! Apparently there is also this app where you have a plant and you have to “water it” (drink water). If you don’t drink enough, it dies. I haven’t tried it but people have told me they like it. I know that I need to drink more water throughout the day!

    • I think there is an app for everything. It’s getting to be a bit much though! lol I end up downloading all of these helpful apps and then forgetting that I downloaded them. I need an app to remind me about the helpful apps that I have downloaded and should be using.

      But that one does sound pretty cool… I will most likely be checking it out. 🙂
